Another recipe that uses fermentation is ginger beer. Below is a fabulous recipe for making ginger beer.
Ginger beer is a carbonated, sweetened beverage produced in two versions.
alcoholic brewed ginger beer or a carbonated soft drink flavoured primarily with ginger and sweetened with sugar or artificial sweeteners,
Equipment:
*Lemon juicer
* Any closed or shakeable bottle of your choice.
* knife or ginger peeler
* Colander or strainer
Ingredients
* 1 teaspoon of dry yeast
* 1 cup of caster sugar
* 1 and 1/2 tablespoons of ginger
* Juice of 1 lemon
* 3-5 tablespoons of sugar
* water
Method:
1) Add ginger, yeast and lemon to the bottle and shake
2) Add the sugar and fill the bottle almost to the top with water and shake again
3) Leave the bottle in a warm place for 24-48 hours
4) Then refrigerate it for about an hour
5) decant and strain remaining ginger in a colander or strainer
6) serve in a glass.
Evaluation:
Fermentation is needed in this recipe to allow the flavour to be created and become a drink by fermenting. It is important it isn't allowed to ferment for up to a year as the longer it ferments the more alcoholic (ethanol) it becomes. But its a beautiful carbonated ginger beer recipe.
