Fermentation- Pizza Recipe
Fermentation is the conversion of sugar molecules into ethanol (alcohol) and carbon dioxide through the use of yeast or bacteria.
Recipe for pizza is below
This recipe: Authentic pizza dough relies on the chemical reactions between yeast, sugar, time and temperature to bring about the reaction of fermentation. As yeast ferments it creates the carbon dioxide which will expand on heating and assist in improving the texture of the yummy pizza crust.
Equipment:
*Large glass bowl
* Small glass bowl
* Wooden Spoon
* Measuring cups and spoons
*Cutting board
*Serving plates and cutlery
Ingredients Between 2 : Pizza Dough
Method:
1. In a small bowl mix warm water, sugar and yeast together.
2. Cover with a tea towel and stand the bowl in a warm area for 10-15 minutes to commence fermentation.
3. In a large bowl combine flour and salt. Make a well in the centre.
4. Add frothing Yeast to flour mixture and 1 tablespoon of olive oil.
5. Mix together thoroughly and knead on clean bench.
6. Place dough in an oiled bowl and cover it for 5 minutes in a warm place to proof. This is is so it rises and ferments.
7. Knead once again for 2 minutes and wrap for freezing. This is optional, you may continue to make. Freezing is if you want to make it at a later date.
Toppings:
1. 1 tablespoon tomato sauce
2. 1/4 cup tomato cooking sauce

5. Additional ingredients of your choice
Method:
1. Pre-heat oven 200 degrees Celsius
2. Roll dough out to fit pizza tray
3. Prepare topping ingredients- some of your toppings may need chopping or pre-cooking
4. combine sauce, tomato paste and herbs and spread over pizza base.
5. Arrange toppings over sauce mixture
6. Top pizza with grated cheese
7. Bake in a hot oven on 200 degrees Celsius for 20 minutes
Some questions you may have:
Q1. What is fermentation?
Well zymology is the scientific name of fermentation and fermentation can be simply defined as the conversion of sugar molecules into ethanol (alcohol) and carbon dioxide by bacteria or yeast.
Q2. What are the ingredients in this recipe that cause fermentation to take place?
Yeast, Sugar and Water.
Q3.How does yeast, sugar, time and temperature work together to generate a chemical reaction?
The sugar first feeds the yeast, then at the right temperature (between 25-40 degrees) it starts to generate and to finish it off the time we leave it allows for it to proof and fermentation to take place.
Q4. What are the two factors that cause the rendering of the two end products?
Ethanol and co2 ( Carbon dioxide) the quantities however vary and depend over time.
Q5.
What is the significance of fermentation to create the end product?
It's vital for fermentation to take place in 'fermented' foods as it allows them to develop and rise.
Evaluation:
Overall this recipe not only tastes amazing, but it is a prime example of a food that uses fermentation.
Some other foods that include fermentation include bread, ginger beer and yogurt. Fermentation is very important to this recipe as without it the dough would be very thin and crumbly. It also wouldn't taste very nice. Fermentation allows it to rise and mix with the toppings well to create a beautiful home made pizza. Finally it also changes the texture and taste to be either light and risen or bitter and fizzy.
